Chill Factore, Manchester

Chill Factore is the first indoor ski slope in the north west of England. Situated off junction 10 of the M60, next to the Trafford Centre, it covers an area of 25,000 square meters and features two distinct environments.

The ‘cold area’ includes three indoor ski slopes with real snow and caters to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.  There is also a children’s snow play area with igloos and slides, a climbing wall and toboggan run.

The ‘warm area’ offers Alpine-themed bars and restaurants with views overlooking the ski slope.

Booth King Partnership was appointed by William Hare Limited to provide structural engineering design for steel super-structure of the project. Our brief was driven by the requirement to make significant cost savings. In order to achieve this the initial scheme design was redeveloped and fundamental changes were made to the stability system and to the roof structure.

The ski slope itself is a highly services space, requiring extensive coordination with the specialist consultant to incorporate the equipment required to make the snow and maintain the required temperature.

The bridging section, end cantilever and trestle supports presented challenging engineering challenges. The completed structural design provided an efficient structural solution which resulted in a reduction on the tonnage of steel and corresponding cost savings.
