Booth King were delighted to welcome three students, two from Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar school, to our Ramsbottom office last week.
The work placement students – Louis, Lewis and Connor spent a week with the team at Booth King learning all about the work of structural engineers.
In addition to spending time with our highly qualified team – they attended site visits and client meetings, including a meeting with Allison Pike Architects regarding one of Booth King’s projects – Premier Inn in Matlock and a site visits to the Dover Street Project in Manchester City Centre and Blue Coat School, Oldham.
The students were also set the task of designing and building a bridge, in order to test their engineering skills.
This included:
- Researching bridges following a specific brief
- Designing the concept
- Preparing electronic drawings using AutoCad
- Creating and analysing electronic models
- Constructing models in line with their design – used cardboard and balsawood
- Testing the structures to demonstrate if the brief was for fulfilled
