Northampton Cathedral Community Centre

Project details

Sector Historic and listed, Public buildings, Refurbishment

Client Northampton RC Diocese Trust

Location Northampton

Value £2,300,000

A large new contemporary extension was formed alongside a Grade 2 listed former Coach House that forms a new community space alongside the Cathedral Gardens. The Coach House was previously used as a garage, and this has been transformed into a distinctive entrance to the Centre that will conserve the original vernacular appearance.

The new extension structure is a two storey steel frame with double height spaces formed with portal frames, a composite first floor and a complex bi-curvature roof formed with lightweight steel. To one elevation the façade is curved, and the other façade is formed using timber colonnades. Booth King completed the structural and civil design works as part of this Traditional Contract to realise EWA’s architectural vision.
