Speed Consultancy at The University of Sheffield

Working with Students at the University of Sheffield

Last Thursday our Associate Liam Heyes attended a full day workshop with third year Architectural Engineering students at the University of Sheffield.

The workshop involved speed consultancy, with the students presenting their integrated design projects which centered around the construction of a new indoor ski slope on the site of a former gasworks in Neepsend. We are all too familiar with the challenges of designing an indoor ski slope having delivered the UK’s longest at Chill Factore in 2007.

The students talked through their thought process on arriving at their preferred structural options which were varied and imaginative, ranging from utilitarian portalised trusses to undulating glulam gridshells.

They had very thoughtfully prepared questions on their designs and took criticisms very positively. A couple of lightbulb moments to boot. Everyone really enjoyed the day.

Booth King attended along with with Max Fordham, Cundall, Aecom, Hulley & Kirkwood and UoS Estates.
